Welcome to a WiSE lunch seminar with Alena Šolcová
Brief Review of Journey into Science and Some Outstanding Heroes who Motivated Me
Alena Šolcová works at the Department of Applied mathematics, Faculty of Information Technology at Czech Technical University, Prague.
At this WiSE lunch seminar, Alena will talk about her journey into science and about some outstanding heroes who have motivated her along the way. She will also share her personal perspective on her career and being a woman in academia.
"Coming from a family with roots in science, I was motivated to become a mathematician from early on. My first interest was in different types of logic (classical, multi-valued, fuzzy) and later on in number theory. With a taste for languages, I always enjoyed drawing on from original sources such as Descartes, Bolzano, Fermat and Johannes Kepler. A common intriguing denominator of all the historical manuscripts I went through was a careful reflection on one's thought process and scientific method. But it was eventually the historical bit which attracted me most - especially when it comes to Johannes Kepler and astronomy. Thus ever since I dedicate myself to raising awareness of mathematics done in Protestant Reformation Europe (16th century) and during the Enlightenment epoch.
Surprisingly, or maybe not so surprisingly, recent developments in Central Europe, being university teacher, mother, woman in science, bring enough twists to these activities that it makes one both breath deeply and smile."
During the seminar, we offer lunch to participants who register before 12:00 on 17 May. The seminar is open to everyone with an interest in female rolemodels within academia - especially from Chalmers, Gothenburg University, Borås University, MedTech West and the Sahlgrenska Academy.
VERY WELCOME TO A WISE SEMINAR!
